Tranche 2:
Support to Migrant Workers and the Urban Poor
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced today the second tranche of the massive 20L crore financial stimulus package declared by our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today’s session put the spotlight on migrant workers, street vendors, small traders and farmers.
It is heartbreaking to watch the hands that build the nation being rendered helpless during a pandemic driven recession. Having resorted to walking home over hundreds of kilometres across states, it was imperative that the vulnerable be provided with some kind of respite from the turmoil.
Well apprised with how the lockdown would impact the not so privileged class of people, the GoI highlighted some key progress points made during the last 2 months of the Covid-19 crisis.
Let’s quickly skim through what major developments so far during the COVID-19 months: (Mar 2020 – Apr 2020)

Key measures in the Pipeline:
- “One India One Wage” to remove wage disparities based on geographies
- Re-skilling of those unfortunate to have lost their jobs
- Compulsory appointment letters and annual health checkups for workers (formalization of the process)
- Mandatory ESIC for workers engaged in hazardous industries
- Nationwide portability of state welfare benefits

- MIGRANTS

Funds totalling massive amounts are being mobilized to uplift the unfortunate during these trying times of crisis. The GoI is actively taking measures to make sure the economic slump is not just contained but given a push towards gradual revival. More measures are expected to be announced in the upcoming tranches so stay tuned with us to remain updated.
