The system used to transport fluids from a point to another is known as Piping. The engineering discipline of Piping Engineering studies the efficient transport of fluid. The work of a piping engineer i.e. piping can be compared to the system of veins and arteries in plants and humans, used to transport various fluids from one part to another in the human body. Similarly, pipes positioned by a piping engineer are used to transport fluids like chemicals from one piece of equipment to another in an industry.
Piping Engineering is a discipline in the field of Mechanical Engineering, that focuses on the positioning and layout of pipes and equipment in chemical, petrochemical, hydrocarbon, or other appropriate industries to safe operation under the rules and regulations, and simultaneously ensure the process is as efficient as possible. The piping components that form a part of this assembly are pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, piping specials, bolts, and gaskets. The piping network is subjected to almost all the severest conditions of the plant such as high temperature, pressure, flow, and combination of these, and hence should be made to withstand the worst conditions with minimum wear and tear.
A growing engineering science field, piping engineering is an essential part of laying a plan for any industry. The placement of the pipes and how the fluids of a factory are transported can affect its efficiency, production speeds, and costs to a great extent. Piping design is extremely important for any process in a plant and hence it is extremely important to have a good pipe network around the plant. A good piping system also ensures the safety of the workers of the plant and also the environment.
A piping engineer’s expertise lies in piping and plumbing systems. Some of the key responsibilities include –
- Preparing all the paperwork for all mechanical equipment.
- Work together with a team of designers to help them complete all mechanical capital projects and provide all engineering support.
- Prepare and design all construction bid documents.
- Analyze all mechanical designs and prepare various concepts for piping designs and develop required mechanical drawings.
- Supervise all purchases made about the job and deal with vendors
- Inspect all mechanical equipment and make sure everything is working properly
- Provide appropriate solutions for all parties and evaluate and analyze all client requirements and design all piping specifications for clients and recommend appropriate alternatives.
- Interpret all codes and maintain the overall performance of all piping activities.
- Provide support to all CADD functions and develop and maintain all activities according to the project schedule and prepare appropriate forecasts.
- Develop new methods to recommend improvements to all activities of the piping section
